Pattern Design & Fashion Product Development
FTM 315: Concepts and practices for the design and development of fashion apparel items, beginning with basic size sloper pattern making and extending through flat pattern development, pattern engineering, and generation of final garments. Provide techniques for development of styled patterns, which address issues of body measurements, body shape, comfort and fit.
For the final project students were tasked with designing a garment, creating the pattern, then constructing it. The guidelines of this garment were to create a garment that was gender-free to appeal to a broader market. The primary inspiration for this garment was a kilt. I was drawn to the crisp, tailored aesthetic of a tradition kilt and felt the strong, classic look could be carried by both males and females– breaking barriers imposed by what is expected of gender. I looked to Harry Styles for further inspiration on the styling of the skirt and paired it with a crisp white shirt; making the piece an item for day and evening wear.
